05 March 2021

The intriguing virtual conference Heritage and Our Sustainable Future: Research, Practice, Policy and Impactwas hosted by the UK National Commission for UNESCO and Praxis at the University of Leeds, with the support of Arts and Humanities Research Council (22.2.2021-2.3.2021).

An international range of cultural heritage and sustainable development participants (policymakers, practitioners, researchers, non-governmental organisations, museums, private sector representatives and other stakeholders) came together to explore how cultural heritage and relevant research can best promote collaboration for sustainable progress and drive forward the United Nation 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Some of the pertinent questions addressed in this conference were:

  • What kind of heritage research is needed now?
  • How can researchers work with practitioners to maximise the ways heritage can contribute to multipleSDGs?
  • How can we rethink and reframe methods for measuring the impact of cultural heritage on sustainable development?
  • What kind of partnerships are needed to influence policymakers and engage the public?
  • How can tangible and intangible heritage be mobilised for the SDGs, particularly in the Covid19 context?
  • How do we ensure that culture and heritage are central to the future development agenda?
