Topic 1 What is the Monitoring Phase?

‘He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future.’

George Orwell

The monitoring phase (or controlling phase) takes place together with the implementation phase. As the project evolves, the project manager must ensure the smooth operation of the tasks and deliverables, timely and within the demands of the project. Any adjustments due to unforeseen circumstances or a change in direction, can happen during this phase.

During the monitoring phase, project managers may implement the following:

  • Manage resources
  • Monitor project performance
  • Perform project meetings
  • Perform project reports
  • Update projects schedule
